nEW PROJECT:

LAKESIDE LIVING

For my first "real" interior design project, I am designing this room (that I have decided is on a lake.) This was my first time actually going through and really picking out the paint colors, furniture, fabrics, and accessories for a room. Not only did I pick out all of those items, I also decided on some structural pieces, like the window types and the fireplace. It was also my first time using SketchUp to visually show my ideas for this interior.

For this room, I tried to decide on a loose theme. I felt this would help me to decide exactly what I wanted the finished product to look like. However, I also wanted to try to not restrict myself with this theme (hence me saying a "loose theme.") I decided I wanted to make the theme a lighthouse. I quickly decided that I did not want to do a cliche beach themed lighthouse room. (Personally, I hate beach houses with all of those shells and pastel colors everywhere.)   So, I decided I would highlight the individual elements of a lighthouse, instead of the location. I love grays, whites, and iron pieces. Luckily for me, these are all important elements in a lighthouse.

The first thing I decided on was the gray wall paint and the dark hardwood floors. These loosely show the lighthouse/beach theme without going overboard. I then decided on the white brick fireplace. White brick, another personal favorite of mine, reflects this lighthouse idea. It reminds me of the weathered white brick of the Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island lighthouses. Likewise, the weathered piece of wood acting as the mantle shows this weathered look even further. Wrought iron will be used throughout this project. Although it is not currently in the photos shown, I have picked out many light fixtures and tables that show this wrought iron look. Wrought iron is also very popular in the older lighthouses inspiring my room.

These iron accessories will show that rustic, lighthouse metal look I want for the whole room.
